Schools Work
Hannah Addison and Paul Langtree work for Woking YMCA as Connexions Personal Advisors in three local secondary schools – Woking High School, Winston Church School and St John the Baptist School. They are known is school as youth workers, or relational youth workers. They also run a schools inclusion project called Nhance at Woking YMCA’s Ypod youth centre in partnership with two of these schools and support a number of other projects for young people.
Their primary aim is to offer information, advice, guidance and support to students who need extra support. A large part of their work involves offering a listening ear to students who have a lot on their mind and need someone to talk. This may be because they are facing challenges at home or in school such as bullying, relationship issues, exam stress, low self-esteem and confidence, anger, alcohol or drug misuse, smoking, poor attendance, family break-up and more.
Hannah and Paul offer a range of services to students including one to one sessions, group sessions, after school activities, lunch time drop-ins and assemblies. Students can drop-in and speak to Hannah and Paul before and after school as well as during breaks and make an appointment for a meeting during lesson time. Hannah and Paul also try to get ‘out and about’ in schools as often as possible during breaks to meet students and make themselves more familiar to the students. Alternatively, a member of staff may feel that a student would benefit from extra support and refer the student.
