ABOUT OUR GIGS
The Ypod is mainly for young people between the ages of 11 and 21 and therefore we prefer our bands and our crowds to be within this age range. Headline bands get some money as a gift towards their expenses. Occasionally some of the ticket money will go to a worthy charity, but usually the ticket money goes to the Ypod (we are a charity too!) to help us with our running costs.
Gigs take place at the Ypod every three weeks on Fridays between 7.30pm and 10.00pm (sometimes we may close earlier depending on the length of the gig). The cafe will open as usual at 4.00pm but will close at 6.30pm to allow time for us to get everything ready for the gig.
We sell half the tickets (100) in advance from the Ypod (tickets are not available from bands or promoters) and the other half (100) on the door. ALL tickets cost £5 per person. Out maximum capacity is 200, depending on available staff.
Any band that wants to play a gig at the Ypod will have to read and sign an agreement beforehand. For more information about this please contact Paul (see bottom of page).
For the safety and enjoyment of everyone at our gigs (including our staff) we do have a few simple rules.
1. No-one believed to be in possession of or under the influence of alcohol or illegal substances will be allowed in - including band members.
2. We will search bags on the door to make sure no-one is bringing in anything they shouldn't.
3. We DO allow 'moshing', but we do NOT allow punching, kicking or other deliberately aggressive behaviour.
4. The Ypod is a no-smoking zone. We do allow people to smoke outside. Re-entry is by 'hand-stamp' only.
5. We have a good relationship with the local police and will call them if necessary.
If you're in a band and you want somewhere to do a gig, why not come to the Ypod?! For more information contact Paul (see bottom of page).
If you're in a band and need somewhere to practice come down to the Ypod on Mondays between 4.00pm and 9.00pm or on Fridays between 4.00pm and 8.00pm (except when we have a gig). We have a dedicated recording studio (click on the ‘Recording Studio’ tab on the left for more information) which also doubles as a rehearsal room. Bands practice on a first-come-first-served for a one hour slot.
We have: A huge PA system, a stage, a Mapex ‘rock’ drum kit (bring your own sticks, cymbal stands and cymbals), 1 Ashdown MAG C115-300 bass amp, 1 Marshall AVT275 guitar amp, microphones, stands and cables. Bands will need to bring any other equipment.
BATTLE OF THE BANDS
On Friday 22nd February 2008 Woking YMCA’s Ypod youth centre held a Battle of the Bands for young people to raise money for Cardiac Risk in the Young (C.R.Y.), for a young person who is taking a gap year to do charity work in Kenya and Sri Lanka and for Woking YMCA’s WhyTalk youth counselling service.
11 young bands from Woking and the surrounding area auditioned for the five spaces to perform at the ‘Battle’. The five successful bands were The Elations (from Woking), Rosemary’s Baby (from Hampton), Sinister Horizons (from Basingstoke), Red Line Atlantic (from Fleet) and Tom Servo (from Egham).
The event was sponsored by Subway of Woking who provided a 6 foot ‘Sub’ as a prize for the winning band, Woking News & Mail who provided a free full colour advert in the Woking News & Mail’s ‘What’s On’ supplement for the winning band, and Humphrey Malins (MP for Woking) who provided an invitation to a free tour of Parliament for the winning band.
All five bands performed 2 songs to the crowd of 140 and the crowd voted for their favourite band. Before the winner was announced the crowd was shown a short presentation about each of the 3 charities being supported. Paul Langtree who organised the event announced the winner and the mayor of Woking presented the prizes to the winning band, The Elations.
For more information about the event, the bands, or anything else related to Woking YMCA and the Ypod, please see the website www.wokingymca.org.uk.

The Elations recieving their prizes from the Mayor of Woking, Brian Cross.
